Details: | SUMMARY: Concerns about high microbial content (not coliforms) and odors in well water DETAILS: Travis Lamb (of Umbrella Properties, manager of this PWS) contacted Casey Lyon regarding complaints about musty-smelling water which started in late 2011, as well as concerns that the water could be causing stomach aches and diarrhea. Ensuing lab tests showed no coliform bacteria, but identified other types of bacteria (including Actinomyces) & algae which can cause musty taste/odor. The HPC count from the well sample was also 1500, indicating a substantial amount of growth occuring. Today DWP Hydrogeologist Russ Kazmierczak looked at the construction records for this well (KLAM 299) and determined that the seal was inadequate. The inadequate seal could allow stagnant or standing water around the well casing to seep down to the aquifer. Ramona Quinn of Klamath Co Public Health did not see any other deficiencies during the latest water system survey that could account for these problems. I relayed to Travis some of the ideas mentioned in our emails, and phoned him to discuss. Travis pointed out that there was no reported problem for years until late 2011, and the only item he can think of that has changed recently is some paving near the well that could possibly affect the runoff patterns. ACTION NEEDED: Given the water test results to date, the state Drinking Water Program does not have regulatory oversight in this situation. Travis will contact a drilling contractor and/or treatment specialist who can go onsite to examine the matter further. Travis knows that any major modification to the well or installing treatment will require Plan Review. |
