Details: | SUMMARY: Call following alert for total coliform in distribution sample DETAILS: Some recent troubles with their coliform sampling. A sample was taken at the end of March. The Lab found that it was > 10 mg/L Chlorine, so it is invalid as a coliform sample. Explanation given: Sampler did not allow the faucet to run long enough to flush it out, and the janitor had just bleached the bathroom fixtures. Replacement sample could not be taken before the end of March. The next sample submitted (dated 4/3/12) came back TC+. Explanation given: Again, inadequate flushing, particularly a problem at this time because there is very little water movement in the system (turbidity is too high in the surface-water source, so all taps are marked "non-potable", and less water is used). Also, Bruce points out that with the low flow faucets, it can be a very long time waiting to get adequate flushing. Caretaker took 5 repeat samples on 4/4/12. Bruce also asked about the definitive limits on NTU levels for the water they can serve because at present, they have to make the water "non-potable" quite often during the winter due to higher levels in the source water. Their cut off is when raw water NTU > 9. I said I would send him the Rule citation on it. ACTION NEEDED: Waiting to hear results of repeat samples. Recommend flushing adequately before sampling. Remove all fittings (aerators, flow restrictors - if they can come off) on faucet before flushing and sampling. Send Bruce OARs on NTU limits for finished water with cartridge filtration. | ||
