Details: | SUMMARY: Plan Review Inspection for Slow Sand Filtration System DETAILS: Fred Kalish and Evan Hofeld conducted an inspection of the slow sand filters, tanks, and system controls for the District under plan review number 192-2010. The filters appeared to be well maintained and operated according to manufacturer specifications. A filter cleaning operation was witnessed and appeared to be conducted approprately using the wet harrowing method specified by the manufacturer. Harrowing occurs roughly every 2 months when the headloss across the filters reaches the level of the harrowing valve as indicated by piezometers on each filter (a head loss of approximately 1-ft). The addition of a sampling schematic and more detail was recommended for the operations manual. More labeling of flow direction, sample taps, and valves was also recommended. Recording the date of filter cleanings and headloss prior to and immediately after cleaning using a tape measure and written log was also recommended. ACTION NEEDED: System to continue to maintain filters according to manufacturer specifications. The acquisition of a portable or bechtop turbidimeter was requested as a means to measure the effluent turbidity of each filter as an indicator of filter ripening/performance, and in order to conduct periodic checks of the on-line CFE turbidimeter. Update the Operations manual with more detail and provide more labeling on piping and valves. |
