Details: | SUMMARY: Treatment system improvements DETAILS: A rapid sand pre-filter is being installed before the cistern to improve the water quality in the cistern. An effort to arrange the components so that gravity flow from the cistern, to slow sand filters, to the clearwell is being made. Additional slow sand filters are in design. Discussed the importance of surface area for slow sand filters. A 1 gpm demand flow would ideally have about 100 square feet of slow sand surface area. A 6 foot diameter cylindrical tank would provide about 28 square feet of surface area. Also discussed slow sand filters being open topped, not needing to be enclosed. Klaas said the slow sand filter does not run at its rated 1.5 gpm capacity. It operates at much slower flow rates. He discussed obtaining tanks from Quadel Industries and was reminded to ask for NSF Standard 61 certification or equivalent. ACTION NEEDED: none |
