Details: | SUMMARY: Complaint from consumer that giardiasis was contracted from drinking system north fountain water. DETAILS: Received a forward email from DWS program from a complaintee stating that she has giardia and contracted it from drinking a gallon of the water during mid September that was drawn from the northside fountain in September. Hard copy of email is in the systems file. ACTION NEEDED: Clatsop County Public Health Environmental Health staff Maureen Taylor did a communicable disease follow up investigation with complaintee on 10/3/13. Investigation showed disease was not confirmed by diagnostic lab test thus under Oregon CD investigative guidelines is considered "suspect" and not reportable to state. Diagnosis made by MD and with highest risk source (water from Hwy road side drinking fountain) identified as source.10/3/2013 Consultation with DWP regarding situation. DWP recommendations- inspect spring, spring box & take TC as soon as possible.10/8/2013 Clatsop County contacted Joe Tavera to discuss situation. Sample for TC recommended to be taken early this quarter and to be taken at the north and south fountains. Discussed status of the spring. Operator states the spring box has not been uncovered in years and access for inspection would shut the system down. Requested he assess the surface of spring area condition when sampling is done.(I instructed operator erroneously to have samples marked special.)10/14/2013 TC samples at northside fountain and at routine sample sites absent for TC.10/21/13 left msg for Joe to have TC samples at northside fountain changed from special to routine. No further follow up at this time. |
