Details: SUMMARY: Well Construction Tech Assistance DETAILS: Bob Bray (site manager) called regarding construction requirements for a new water supply well that is within 6 ft of the current water system well. The current water system well is e.coli contaminated. The well driller was already on site and had drilled and cased to a depth of 20 ft below ground. I explained that there was a Plan Review process that the water system should have pursued prior to well construction. Under the circumstances I recommended they continue drilling provided that the older e.coli contaminated well be formally abandoned. I also recommended that they attempt to drill and seal the well into a confined water-bearing zone within the underlying bedrock material to minimize the potential for contamination. Bob indicated that the original well on site was an older 4-inch diameter driven well that was about 30 ft deep and that it would be abandoned. In a follow-up conversation, Bob indicated that the Well Driller had reviewed other well logs in the area and did not think that there was reasonable chance of finding a productive water-bearing zone within the bedrock. Bob indicated that they would likely construct the well to draw water from the sand and gravel that rests directly on top of the bedrock. I said that due to the contamination in the old well, that is about the same depth, OHA-DWP would likely require monthly monitoring from either the distribution system or the well during the first year of operation. I also made it clear that the final construction of the well needed to go through our Plan Review process. Bob indicated that he had received the Plan Review paperwork. ACTION NEEDED: Water system needs to submit Plan Review paperwork. Based on Plan Review paperwork determine if monthly distribution monitoring or monthly source assessment monitoring should be required.
