Details: | Background/Problem Identification: ODF Spruce Run is a small water system that provides spring water to a small campground restroom. The source has coliform issues and the ODF operator is looking to the circuit rider for assistance. Assistance Provided: The circuit rider reached out to Matthew Grantham of ODF and set up a site visit on 12/09/2020 to assess the existing water system. In order of the flow direction the simple system consists of: • Stream that flows into a ~1,000 gallon tank • Several hundred feet of PVC pipe • Grit filters (20” big blue type) • 2,000 gallon tank • Campground restroom with: o Sinks o Toilets • A “host” campsite ODF expressed a willingness to removing the sinks and the connection to the host, but there is a fear that the remaining toilet water (if untreated) could pose a potential risk for Legionaries’ (aerosols due to flushing). After further research into Legionella and discussion with OHA, we believe that given the low temperature of the water, the risk of Legionella forming, or aerosol transmission is unlikely. Our recommendation is to either provide filtration/disinfection to the surface water to meet drinking water standards, or do as ODF suggested and remove the following elements from the system: • Sinks • Campground “host” Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is available to assist as needed if a filtration and disinfection system is desired. |
