Details: | On April 9th, DEQ notified DWS that approximately 2500 gallons of gasoline was released from an underground storage tank a few days earlier in the City of Monmouth near Hwy 99 and Main St. There were concerns the fuel could deteriorate and compromise the City's waterlines. The City provided DEQ and DWS waterline material data. DWS emailed City resources to help assess waterlines exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons. Initial drinking water sampling after the gasoline release detected benzene at 0.658 ug/L, which is below the MCL of 5 ug/L and above the minimum detection limit of 0.5000 ug/L. DWS hydrogeologist confirmed no impact to City groundwater wells. Additional drinking water samples collected on April 16th were non-detect for benzene. A total of six drinking water samples were collected. DWS informed the City to report the benzene detection in their annual consumer confidence report and inquired about additional steps being taken to further evaluate impact to waterlines and water quality. On April 22nd, DWS received an update on the gasoline release. Two more sets of water samples are scheduled for 4/23 and 4/30. The City is currently negotiating with the Responsible Party to do quarterly sampling for the next 12 months and is involved in process to determine locations to place monitoring wells. Action: The City will provide additional information once it is available. |
