Details: | SUMMARY: Regulatory Assistance for Water Odors Associated With Drilling of New Well DETAILS: Received call from Gene Hubbard in mid March regarding odors in the water at Chaparral as a few customers complained about a "fuel-like" odor. The system confirmed the smell, performed tests, and narrowed the source of to the well at 58th and Jaguar. They began using the Mesa well while they flushed the Jaguar well thoroughly and the problem went away. In early April, warm weather increased demand and they started using the Jaguar well again and the odor returned. They took samples for petroleum products and SOC/VOC samples, and supplied bottled water to customers who wanted it. As weather cooled, they used just the Mesa well. It was revealed a new well had been drilled adjacent to the Jaguar well and the driller used a lot drilling foam when a bit got stuck in the well bore hole. I worked with the system as well as Russ and Carrie with DWP. They contacted the driller and discussed the use of the foam and requested the MDS. The product is NSF approved. The system continued to pump both the #4 and #5 well to waste. Preliminary SOC/VOC results are ND. The system took several samples and could not detect any more odors. The new well #5 is currently in plan review and pending final approval before use. ACTION NEEDED: Continued monitoring for any odors from wells #4 or #5. Do not use well #5 until final approval from Carrie Gentry. |
