Details: | SUMMARY: Potassium Permanganate Dose Resulted in Pink Water DETAILS: On Thurs 12/22/16 potassium permanganate was dosed at too high a level (concentration was slightly under 4% and the dose was 2 mg/l), which after nearly 20 hrs, caused the finished water to turn pink. Potassium permanganate is used for iron & manganese removal, but if overdosed it leaves a residual that causes pink water. The City was contacted Friday 12/23 by the 1st customer on the line about the pink water. The City determine the the pink color had traveled down the mainline to Old Soldiers Rd. (4.5 miles from the water plant and 2 miles from the concrete reservoir). City started dumping the finished water coming down the mainline at the concrete reservoir to keep from contaminating the old reservoir. After 26-28 hrs. 900,000 gallons of finished water had been dumped from the mainline and the clear well combined, until the water was clear at the old reservoir. Outreach was done to customers on Meadow lake and YCOM (Yamhill Co. Communications) was informed of the issue. Yamhill County Health officials who had been briefed on the incident expressed they felt the City responded appropriately. This information was primarily furnished by the City via e-mails dated 12/27/16 and 1/6/17 ACTION NEEDED: No further action needed. |
