Details: | Salem reached out to DWS Friday 10/1/21 to request a meeting on Wed. 10/6/21 regarding the City of Salem Willow Lake Laboratory having a question on how to report some recent cyanotoxin data and looking for OHA guidance. During the meeting that occurred Thursday 10/7/21, the city indicated that a raw water sample collected from the intake to the treatment plant on Tuesday 9/28/21 showed total microcystins at 0.402 ug/L. Reanalysis of the same sample showed varying results (one higher result and one non-detect) and the city inquired how to report the results. DWS indicated to Salem that if the lab validated the results showing a detection, they should have been reported within 2 days after analysis began, and the city started weekly finished water monitoring beginning within one day of receiving the raw water results. OHA requested during the meeting that the city report the 9/28/21 raw water results and collect a finished water sample as soon as possible, and begin weekly raw and finished cyanotoxins monitoring until the criteria for reduced monitoring are met. The city reported the raw water results to OHA 10/7/21 and indicated they would collect a finished water sample Thursday 10/7/21. Results available Friday 10/8/21 were non-detect for cyanotoxins. Next weekly raw and finished monitoring will occur Monday 10/11/21. Note: a raw water sample was collected Thursday 9/30/21 (only total microcystins analyzed and results were non-detect) and on Monday 10/4/21 and Tuesday 10/5/21 (both samples non-detect for both toxins). OHA suggested the city consider testing for cyanotoxins at locations in the distribution system where they think water from the 9/28/21 time period may be located based on residence times since finished water monitoring at the entry point to the distribution system did not occur at the time of the raw water detection. Update 10/13/21: raw and finished samples collected Tuesday 10/12/21 were non-detect for cyanotoxins. |
