Details: SUMMARY: Two Nitrate Samples Exceed MCL DETAILS: The Hood River County Health Department received an alert by fax on Thursday 12/13/07 @ 9:05 AM for the OWC in response to 2 Nitrate sample results which exceeded the action level of 0.5 MCL. Sample Id 0731814PD, collected on 11/14/07, has a nitrate concentration of 8 mg/L-- sample ID 0724009PD, collected on 8/28/07, had a nitrate concentration of 8.4 mg/L. A second alert was received on Thursday 12/20/07 @ 9:05 AM for the Odell Water Company in response to an earlier Nitrate sample result which also exceeded the action level of 0.5 MCL. Sample ID 0716424PD, collected on 6/13/17, has a nitrate concentration of 8.4 mg/L. HRCHD discussed these results with Phil Davis the week of 12/3/07 and acknowledged that the action level would be triggered, but that the trend of increasing nitrate concentrations appears to have plateaued. OWC is recognized by the DHS SWP online database for maintaining nitrate samples reliable and consistently below the MCL. Subsequently, the sampling schedule expectation is to comply with yearly nitrate sampling-- quarterly nitrate sampling is still not expected or required for the OWC. OWC has agreed nonetheless to increase the number of samples collected during the year to provide additional monitoring. ACTION NEEDED: HRCHD has initiated dialogue with the DWP Springfield office to begin a surveillance effort to identify likely contributory point sources that may be amenable to remediation to mitigate further increase in the nitrate concentration. If nitrate values exceed the MCL, an adjustment to the chemical schedule will be imposed.
