Details: SUMMARY: Well 7(L84243) Plan Review 129-2007 and Operations DETAILS: This well has been in operation since about December 2008, but source water samples are still indicating the presence of total coliform. However, chlorine is injected at the well head and there is a tee in the mainline with 24 inch diameter main running east, and 24 inch main running west. It is approximately 1100 feet to the first customer each direction. The well pumps 1700 gpm and there is a continuous chlorine residual monitor at the well control building, residual is 0.7 mg/l. The pipeline volume in each direction is ~25,849 gallons, and using a worst case of the entire 1700 gpm going one direction, there is 15 minutes contact time. At 0.7 mg/l residual the actual CT is 10.6. The required CT is 6 (from tables for 4 log virus inactivation). THEREFORE 4 LOG VIRAL INACTIVATION MET. The water department has tried several methods to disinfect the well, but will try calcium hypochlorite granules. The well has a gravel pack which may be contributing to the problem. Burnett sent excerpts from the AWWA Groundwater Manual 21 pertaining to gravel packs and disinfection of the well. Dorning will also consult with Box R laboratory regarding speciation of the bacteria. ACTION NEEDED: DWP to finalize plan review and enter Well 7 information in data base (submit data to Springfield office for review if necessary). CHLORINATION IS CONSIDERED TO BE RESIDUAL MAINTENANCE PENDING DETAIL REVIEW UNDER GWR CRITERIA. City to disinfect well using calcium hypochorite and will continue to monitor source water coliform.
