Details: SUMMARY: Follow up to algae in raw reservoir DETAILS: Neal called on 7/27/09 to report that the sample results from the raw 50 MG reservoir indicated that the algal species Anabaena was present at 56,000 cells per mL. I consulted with Laura Boswell and Casey Lyon internally, and they indicated that both raw and finished water should be analyzed for associated toxins. I communicated this strong recommendation to Neal as well as potential options for the City to consider in the interim to meet expected high demands. Neal indicated options of connecting to emergency connection with Gearhart and bypassing raw reservoir and pumping directly from intake to plant would only meet temporary demand. City will need to use raw reservoir to help meet demand. Indicated to Neal that carbon addition to static mix can assist in treating toxins if toxins present. I forwarded list of labs, DHS algae information for operators, as well as contact info for HBH and JWC for assistance/input on carbon feed system engineering possibilities. ACTION NEEDED: City will pursue toxin testing of raw and treated water ASAP. City will meet internally to design carbon addition system to static mixer. DWP to research alternative treatment techniques for algae. DWP to provide support as necessary to City.
