Details:	SUMMARY: System assistance, with Disinfection DETAILS: System owns and operates a small community water system utilitizing groundwater as a source. The system experienced several positive samples following a water main break. The water distribution system now needs chlorination as a result. After communicating with system, it was decided to chlorinate the distribution system with a does to obtain a residual of 4.0 ppm free chlorine. The system notified all customers in advance of the procedure. To disinfect the distribution system, 300 gallons of dilute hypochlorite was prepared and metered into the wellhead to achieve an approximate 4.0 ppm free chlorine dose, measured using a Hach Packet Colorimeter. The dose was followed through the system, checking hose bibs at the bottom of the system and working up. Approximately 5,400 gallons of chlorinated water was pumped into the distribution system before the effort was terminated. We had a strong residual at the water tanks and all points in the system. System staff will wait several days and test to see that the chlorinated water is out of the system before pulling another bacteriological sample. ACTION NEEDED: The system staff is eager to improve water quality and water system. The City of Myrtle Creek donated a 300 gallon tank the district staff can use to chlorinate their system. We will be on the lookout for a good deal on a metering pump to make the system more accurate, in the meantime, I will write a SOP for chlorinating the system so staff can easily chlorinate as needed. Also, I will write a SOP for main break repairs as well as help them identify any potential cross connections they may exist in their system.
