Details: | SUMMARY: Inquiry about Prescott arsenic MCL DETAILS: Mark Siegel, Assistant Director of Communications for Sen Jeff Merkley, called to get info about the City of Prescott and their arsenic MCL. I explained to him that the City had been aware of the issue since about 2005 and had been working to identify ways to treat the existing water or develop a new source. I told him that centralized treatment proved to be very expensive to operate and maintain and that an alternative to extend a pipeline to get water from the Trojan wells was also too expensive. I told him that the City opted for point of use treatment, which was an acceptable method for removing arsenic. He asked about why the residents had to pay for the units. I explained to him that our office does not typically address how treatment is paid for and that the City could have purchased them up front and passed the costs on to customers through increased rates, but the City chose to have the residents pay up front. He asked about deadlines and the $600 plan review fee and I explained to him that this is a standard review fee our program charges for a community water system installing treatment and that City needed to install the units by Sept 1, 2010 and demonstrate compliance by December 31, 2010. He asked if any other political offices were aware of Prescotts efforts and I told him that Columbia Co Commissioner Tony Hydes office was aware. He asked if Senator Betsy Johnsons office was aware and I said that I would not be surprised, since she is fairly actively involved in issues facing water systems in that region. ACTION NEEDED: Mark to call if further questions arise. I told him that we were on furlough on Friday, but that the office would be open on Monday if he wanted to call and speak to James Nusrala (DWP engineer 971-673-0459 ) or he could call Mark Edington (503-366-3828) with Columbia County. |
