| Details: | SUMMARY: Investigating complaint DETAILS: Last week, a consumer called with concerns about the water quality of their water after it goes through miles of outdated pipes (known for high leakage). She felt the EP chemical monitoring may not reflect its composition at the tap. Also, the caller is sensitive to chlorine: she notices health problems when drinking their water or inhaling shower steam. PWS operator Tom Shadden says he aims to keep the CL residual between 0.8-1.2 mg/L when it exits the plant, and since CL dissipates, it cannot be higher farther off in the lines. Adair has maintained this CL level for years, and feels it works well as there have been no microbial problems. They monitor the CL residual daily at the plant, weekly at more distant distribution points, and monthly when taking coliform samples. I asked him to review Adairs tracer study, as that should be the basis of the chlorine dosage used. Tom said the caller lives in an area added to their systems distribution about 6 years ago, when a booster station was added to serve them. Regarding flushing, Tom said no hydrant or blow-off was installed in that area. I phoned back the original caller, and let her know that taste/odor complaints tend to increase when CL level > 1.0 mg/L, although it is well within federal limits. I explained where and how often Adair currently monitors the residual level, and suggested that she ask them to add a routine sampling site in her community. She said she would do so, and also follow up on why no hydrant or blow off was installed on their dead-end lines when their area became part of the Adair distribution system. The caller was already familiar with how to access DWPs online database to track the monitoring results for her water system. ACTION NEEDED: Provide OAR citation re: hydrants or blow offs on dead-end lines. Caller is researching a whole-house filtration system. | ||
