None

Details: SUMMARY: Discussed GWR Corrective Action options DETAILS: Contacted Mat Barnett because the wording of the Corrective Action letter emailed to them today from Klamath County was not broad enough to address all possible sources of contamination last summer (when E. coli was confirmed in the well water). The letter did not mention the Forest Services site investigation and their own consideration of possible contamination sources Because the USFS has many years of negative coliform sampling data for this well, Mat believes the contamination did not originate in the subsurface groundwater, but was an incident from the surface. He added that handpumps in remote locations like this are hard to protect from animal activity or vandalism. For example, staff reported seeing bird droppings on the handpump. In order to greatly reduce the vulnerability to contamination in the future, the Forest Service is proposing to enclose the well in a building and change from a handpump to a submersible pump (with solar power). This type of set up would be much less vulnerable to either animal or people activity. ACTION NEEDED: Delbert Bell of Klamath County and I will reword the Corrective Action letter and send the revised version to the same USFS recipients. Mat will prepare Plan review materials for changing the handpump at East Davis Lake to a submersible pump enclosed in a wellhouse. Mat will also attempt to set up training this spring for the campground concessionaire staff/Hoodoo and a few USFS recreation staff on coliform sampling requirements, and what is required after a positive result for fecal coliform. I will send Mat the draft version of a start up checklist for seasonal water systems.
