Details: SUMMARY: Construction worker breaks water main DETAILS: On 2/25/15 our office received a call from the Café in the renovated Old School Building on the Childrens Farm Home Campus. The operator stated that the Café was had no pressure in the water lines serving the Café and wanted to know if the could continue to operate. This prompted a call to Chris Weir one of the water system operators at the Farm Home. He stated that a construction contractor had broken a water main. They were instructed to post a boil water notice and take special distribution samples after the repair was complete. They were instructed to keep the boil water notice in place until the samples proved the system was free of bacteria. I sent electronic copies of the boil water notice template and the best management practices to Chris. Russ Kazmeirczak in the Springfield office was notified of the incident. Russ was concerned that a do not drink may need to be issued due to the history of elevated nitrate levels at the Farm Home. Russ researched the issue and found that only if the nitrate levels were at 10 ppm or above that a do not drink order would be required. The systems nitrate levels generally test quarterly between 7 and 9 ppm. Russ had direct contact with Mark Elledge the main water system operator. The boil water notice was posted and received by our office. Special distribution samples returned on Friday 2/27/15, showing the system was free of bacteria. The boil water notice was lifted. ACTION NEEDED: Send the boil water notice and follow-up coliform tests to DMCE.
