Details: SUMMARY: Follow-up and Corrective Actions DETAILS: Today we received notification from both the local testing laboratory (Spring Street Analytical) and the Drinking Water Program that the water in Sprague River Water Association is contaminated with E coli bacteria. These were the repeat samples taken after the monthly routine sample was positive for both Total and Fecal Coliform Bacteria.• I have talked with the association secretary Shirley Dutt and are sending to her the attached is the Public Notice (Boil Water Order) for their distribution to their customers.• I told Shirley to have the water operator Thurman Parish increase the amount of chlorine (double) being injected into the water system. This will help kill bacteria already in the system.• I am trying to meet with the water system operator and look at the system for potential sources of contamination and measure disinfectant levels throughout the water system.• Unless the source of the E coli contamination can be readily identified and corrected, the boil water order will remain in effect and the system may need to take additional actions such as mandatory and permanent chlorination ACTION NEEDED: • Meet with the water system operator and look at the system for potential sources of contamination and measure disinfectant levels throughout the water system.• Unless the source of the E coli contamination can be readily identified and corrected, the boil water order will remain in effect and the system may need to take additional actions such as mandatory and permanent chlorination. • If the system wishes and so requests, I believe the County Commissioners are authorized to request that the National Guard provide a portable water tank for residents to fill water containers. I am not sure of this process to do this but contacting Morgan the county Emergency Manager would be a good start.
