Details: SUMMARY: Water Quality ALERT DETAILS: Shawn, I was digging through old files to find the well driller’s log to see how many gallons of water the well casing holds. I found notes stating the primary source of water was a dug well and they also had a well in a building which reported was rarely used. I also remember another drilled well (not in a building) I suggest you verify what well is in use.If it is the dug well there are very few of these that get satisfactory sample results without using disinfection. The attached document gives you an idea of how much chlorine to add and how long to leave it in the system prior to flushing. You can usually get a good idea of how much water the well holds and then need to guess about piping running around the property. When you get a valid number of gallons to use, plug that number into cell “F6” and I hope next steps are evident to you. The attached Word document should be shared with residents after you fill in the blanks of what they need to know about potential risks. After you distribute please forward a copy to the state. The state’s sample protocol for this property is one total coliform sample per calendar quarter and 1 nitrate sample per calendar year. When results are poor it will lead to additional sampling or providing some kind of treatment or both. Before end of October, 5 TEMPORARY ROUTINE samples are due from the distribution system. I suggest collecting them scattered around the property. You might enjoy taking this on-line class regarding operating a small public water system: http://public.health.oregon.gov/HealthyEnvironments/DrinkingWater/OperatorCertification/SmallWaterSystems/Pages/basicsonline.aspx ACTION NEEDED: public notice for unresolved coliformsConsider a chlorine shock and flush prior to collecting5 temporary routines
