Details: SUMMARY: Reqs for Surface Water Treatment DETAILS: Bandon Well and Pump did not think a drilled well in that area would be productive. So Kim phoned and emailed me to ask the requirements to make their surface water system state approved. She also said they approached the neighbors - a few nearby houses also on surface water - but they did not want to join to make enough people for a community water system. Right now, 80 acres is on the cusp of that threshold. To come in to compliance, I explained to Kim that their Co-op needs to research what type of SW filtration they want to install and go through the plan review process. Once they choose a filtration type, DWS can tell them the approved models. Again, I strongly encouraged them to seek guidance from someone who knows how different types of SW treatment has worked out for other small systems. Considerations include both the upfront costs and the ongoing fiddling, maintenance, replacement costs, etc. Even without being a commuity system, the non-profit OAWU could help, and I gave Kim their contact info. I had spoken to Scott Berry at OAWU a few weeks ago and again today-- he will contact Kim now. In the past, he just left a message for Don Pedro. Scott says that OAWU can also provide organizational/rate-setting assistance, which 80 Acres will also need as part of these improvements. I also reiterated to Kim that if they become a CWS, some types of assistance would be free from the state Circuit Rider, Civil West. I emailed her the contact information for the regional plan review coordinator at DWS. Most of this information had already been communicated in emails during the last six weeks, but now that the residents know they will not be able to switch from surface water to a well source, they are onto the next set of issues. ACTION NEEDED: Track status towards compliance. Will need to reissue a Boil Water Advisory every 90 days.
