Details: SUMMARY: Coliform + - Level 1 Investigation Necessary DETAILS: On 9/14/17, we received an email notification of a positive water test (coliform bacteria). This same day, we were responding to the Eagle Creek Fire (2017) and the Crystal Springs WD (#OR4100386) boil water advisory. We called the ranger station and left a message with their office personnel reminding them to collect repeat samples. As expected, their staff were heavily involved with the Eagle Creek Fire as well (USFS).On 9/20/17, we received another email alert indicating that several of the repeat samples were also positive. We did not respond directly with the water system at that time (also due to the fire response). We knew that the ‘level 1’ investigation forms would be mailed to the water system automatically. On 9/22/17, Claire Fernandez contacted our office and left a voice message-- she stated that she was the temporary person responsible for the water system. As well, she stated that there had been 18" of snowfall at the water source and that follow-up would be impossible until after the snow melted. Further, she stated that they intended to ‘shock’ chlorinate the source. We responded to her call-- however, we were only able to leave a voice message (9/22/17). We stated that the next step was a ‘level 1’ investigation. We discouraged them from shock-chlorinating the source without first identifying the cause of the contamination. We have not heard back from the operator since that call (as of 9/27/17).The water system is closed to the general public at this time. It may still be used by the USFS and by the search & rescue folks. It will close seasonally according to the pending winter weather on Mt. Hood. ACTION NEEDED: Perform a Level 1 investigation.
