Details: 04.17.2024-DWS received a complaint from a resident at Whaleshead via DWS phone duty line. The caller informed us that the drinking water at Whaleshead was shut off this morning. The work crew was told last night that they would have to be shutting off the water, but no one provided timely notification to the affected residents. Residents were notified this morning, three hours after the water was shut off. The caller had additional concerns regarding a possible diesel spill on the roads by the repair vehicles that could be seeping into the water system. Deanna Strange, Whaleshead operation manager was contacted. Deanna clarified that management did know last night that the water would be shut off and the water was not fully shut off until the boil advisory was issues today at 10:30 am. The issue was detected through a resident that called to report a leak some. The leak has been detected and staff are repairing the leak affecting the upper area of the park. Sections T, OV and I. Regarding the possible diesel fuel spill, Deanna reported that they had a backhoe digging up areas during the leak investigation, but no diesel spill observed. Giovanni Rangel, the maintenance supervisor is onsite and corroborated this. The boil will be lifted once lab results show absence of coliform contamination.

Update 04/17/2024:  A Whaleshead community member reached out to me informing me that additional sections of the park not included in the initial boil advisory notice have been out of water. Deanna has reposted the boil that has now extended to sections S and U.

Update 04/19/2024:  The leak affecting sections S, OV, and I was found and repaired. Water has been restored to these sections. Workers on site have found another leak affecting sections U and T. The leak seems to be in a brushy area that is not easily accessible with machines. workers may have to hand shovel. Water will be shut off in sections U and T to preserve water and avoid burning up the pump. The boil advisory for sections S, T, U, OV and I, is still in effect.
