Details: | Informed the water system that alerts were generated for detections of gross beta particle activity in samples collected on May 6, 2025, at entry points EP-E, EP-A, and EP-B, the entry points for Fleck Well #5, Well #4, and Well #3, respectively, Chenowith PUD is not considered vulnerable for beta emitters per -0036(7)(b)(A) and the system does not need to test for them, but did so of its own volition. Though gross beta particle activity was detected in these samples, the levels are considered safe and below the maximum contaminant level (MCL). The MCL is 4 mrem/year for beta emitters, but the results were reported in pCi/L. Because it is impractical to directly measure dose in drinking water samples, the EPA uses a conversion process: for gross beta (which includes both natural and human-made beta emitters), the EPA uses a screening level of 50 pCi/L. If the gross beta concentration is below 50 pCi/L, the water is generally considered to be in compliance with the 4 mrem/year standard. The sample results were well below that screening level; therefore, they are considered compliant. Additionally, notice was given to the water system and North Central Public Health District that sodium levels in the same samples exceeded the advisory level of 20 mg/L. There is no MCL for sodium and consumers should consult the following sodium health effects information for more details: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/HealthyEnvironments/DrinkingWater/Monitoring/Documents/health/sodium.pdf |
