Details: | SUMMARY: total coliform MCL violation confirmed throughout system DETAILS: I returned a call to Mr. Young on 11/28/12, who had spoken to Karen Kelley the day before. The repeat samples had shown TC throughout the distribution and at Well 2. On 11/27, he had inspected Well 2 to see if there were any obvious sources of contamination - No. On 11/28, he took a source sample from Well 3, although it was not in use during the MCL violation period, he just wanted to make sure the TC was not in the aquifer that both Wells 2 & 3 draw from. I spoke to Maureen at Spring Street Analytical so that this Well 3 sample would be properly labeled/reported (source assessment sample). The Well 3 source sample was negative. Duane also inspected the 200,000 storage tank - no problems noted. Now Duane is unsure whether the original triggered sample at Well 2 was truly a direct sample from the well - he says he plumbed that tap from the main line behind the pumphouse (that contains water from all sources), not directly from Well 2 itself. Also, he was unsure whether the Well 2 pump was even on when he took that triggered sample. Conclusion - he will take a true source sample from both Well 2 & Well 1 on Monday (not enough time this week to have lab process it). Then we will work out how to disinfect the entire water system. For a distribution system of this size, it may be wise to start having a chlorine residual permanently in place after this. ACTION NEEDED: Emailed many materials to Duane on How to Disinfect a Well, Storage Tank, etc., and a handout with tips on how to select coliform sample locations, etc. Check back in when he has the source sample results from wells 1 and 2. Research how best to conduct disinfection using the low level chlorination (<4 ppm) method for a week or two. Duane says he can borrow the chlorinator they have at their lagoon for that length of time. | ||
