Details: | SUMMARY: working on problem where pH peaks after chemical backwash DETAILS: Jim called to let me know they are working on an issue where the pH at their entry point jumps up after chemical backwash (using caustic soda). It was recently recorded at 8.9 the day following the backwash. He wanted to know if there is a public drinking water reg concerning pH that high. Our rules give a pH range of 6.5 - 8.5-- outside of those parameters is a secondary MCL. Secondary MCLs do not have an immediate consequence, but the public water system must be actively attending to it. Jim has contacted Bandon Pump to come and clean a valves solenoid, which Seccua believes is the problem This may allow the finished water that cleans out the caustic to get back into their tanks. If Bandon Pump cant do it, Jim will go further afield and contact Hyland Services. It will require someone to dismantle the pipes and valves and diagnose. ACTION NEEDED: I emailed Jim our rule language, and also the section from our Basics SWSTC Manual regarding care of pH meters. He is not sure he trusts their pH meter. Follow their progress in addressing the problem. Make sure they are still meeting CT each day. |
