Details: SUMMARY: Arsenic alert DETAILS: The 1st qtr Arsenic(As) sample exceeded the MCL. Talked to Melissa Walton on 3/29/16, 4/13/16, 4/25/16, regarding past violations, operation of the treatment system and public notice requirements. Ms. Walton indicated that they have had several issues with the system since the treatment system was installed. The first one was last fall when the backwash process caused treatment media to be washed out of the system. The operator then collected a sample without replacing the media, which resulted in a As violation. After the backwash incident, during the winter, some of the treatment system pipe(s) broke due to freezing weather and the system was down at the time of sample collection. Since the treatment system was not operating, the water system exceeded the 1st qtr MCL. After the 1st qtr violation, Ms. Walton indicated that the City of Paisely ended up having the treatment representative help them out with operation of the system and resolve their MCL violations. The representative also provided additional training to the operator (Duane), contact (Melissa) and city councilors. They ended up videotaping the training to make sure that everyone is aware how the system operates. At the time of the training, the treatment rep collected test kit samples and Ms. Walton reported that the samples tested non-detect for arsenic. After the treatment issues were resolved and the test kit samples indicated that the As system was working properly, the City of Paisley collected a second qtr sample for testing. Once the analysis is complete, the 2nd qtr results will be sent to the State. Shortly after the training and sample collection, a coupling broke during backwash and the system. A plumber is working to fix the broken coupling by the end of this week. ACTION NEEDED: Maintain As level below the MCL, collect 3rd qtr sample, and issue public notice as required.
