Details: | Background/Problem Identification: WEWS is having issues with DBPs and in particular, assessment of the longevity of the media in their recently installed GAC reactor. Below we list our recommendations for both the reactor and the DBP issue: GAC Reactor: • From conversation with C. Clifton, it appeared that the GAC was not “lasting” as long as had been anticipated by the system. We suggest adding a meter and test ports before and after the GAC filter to test for TOC removal and to record total volumes passing through the filter to determine efficacy. • It is possible that by adding a manufacturer approved coagulant prior to the Enge membrane, that more TOC could be removed. This could lower TOC prior to the GAC filter, thus extending the life of the carbon media. DBP Issues: • We are recommending that a CT Study be done. As part of the CT Study, various tweaks may be made that can optimize the system to help mitigate the excessive DBP formation issue. Assistance Provided: The circuit rider contacted Corrine by phone and discussed many options the system could pursue both in regard to the GAC efficacy and also the optimization of the disinfection contact system used at Weiss Estates Water System. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is planning on assisting the system with a CT Study to help optimize the contact time and chlorine residual in an effort to minimize DBP formation.
