| Details: | 07.229.31 - Out of caustic soda. Corinne reports that they ran out of caustic soda used for cleaning the membrane filter. In the absence of caustic soda she will use hot water to clean the membrane filter. She is heating one gallon of hot water to boiling point then adds cool water until the final temperature is 105 degrees (F). The hot water is then Pumped into the membrane. It stays soaking for a couple hours and then back washed. I consulted with Evan. His advised for Corinne was to make sure she is not exceeding the temperature tolerance of the membrane filters. A lot of CIP chemicals are heated, so if she is just using the same temperature setting, but fill the CIP tank with filtered water rather than caustic, this may not be enough to really clean off the organics that foul a membrane and may lead to permanent fouling. She was advised to contact the membrane manufacturer rep for alternative cleaning regimes (they may recommend 50 ppm chlorine for example). |
