Details: SUMMARY: Coagulation/Filtration Process Failure Assistance DETAILS: System operates a surface water treatment plan utilizing water from Luck Creek. The operator experienced 3 days of difficult water treatment which resulted in treated water storage reaching critical low levels. The problem appeared to have started with a combination of seasonal colored leaf tea water, colder temperatures and the replacement of a alum metering pump. Mr Miller has performed numerous jar tests and does an excellent job of recording conditions and results of the jar tests. After reviewing his test results, filter profiles and viewing the water, I decided to reduce both the alum dose and the flocculent aide close. It appeared that the replacement alum metering pump was not working properly and was delivering a high dose to the water. Due to the cold water the reaction time of the alum was not forming as quickly as normal and was making the jar test results in misleading also. We also mixed up some N-300 filter aide, set up a new feed point and polished the filter turbs further. ACTION NEEDED: Mr Miller has reported that the plant ran through the night and was able to slowly gain on treated water storage. Treated water turbidity remains very low and filter runs have been excellent. He has ordered a supply of N-300 poly and equipment to meter the poly and mix it. Traditionally the Milo WTP has fed both alum and 573C polymer in variable doses. We were going to try a new strategy of a constant flow proportional dose of 573C and N300 (as necessary) and varying the coagulant dose to treat turbidly and color. Mr Miller may also try a polyaluminum chloride product to counter the slow reaction time of the aluminum sulfate.
