Details: | SUMMARY: watershed reporting date and coliform testing DETAILS: OAR 0040 says that unfiltered systems have to report their annual watershed report to the state by September 30 each year, but Portland has always done it in December. This year, since I am late on the write up of the watershed inspection and the sanitary survey, I gave them until one month after they receive my write up to submit the report. Also, they asked about using a new test method for their source water coliform testing, required as part of the exemption to filtration criteria. That standard is for Fecal coliform, so they must use a method that tests for fecal, not Ecoli. I discussed the difference with Irene Ronning at the Lab and confirmed that the two are different and different methods give different results. She said the membrane filtration method generally gives the lowest results, but it does give fecal results. Yone asked why the standard is written as fecal, when there are newer and better methods available that give an Ecoli result. I said I would have Gary Burnett mention it on the Total Coliform Rule revision committee as a topic for consideration. ACTION NEEDED: none |
